In 1939, the longtime girlfriend of a daredevil Army Air Corps test pilot is in an accident that renders her comatose. Grief-stricken, he volunteers to be frozen alive for a year in a cryogenics experiment, in the hopes that she will have recovered by the time he is ready to be thawed out.

But his body remains in a deep freeze for 50 years until two children accidentally revive him. As the pilot attempts to cope with all the technological and cultural developments that have occurred during his sleep, he hurriedly tries to find the scientist who froze him and the woman he left behind.
