Indy Car II Racing Review Addendum

Reviewed by: Jonathan Wrobel

Comments:
Since my review of IndyCar II Racing for Macintosh was posted, I have received a flood of e-mail asking about various things. I hope to cover all your points by including this addendum to my review.

Thanks for all those people who wrote to me. Your continued support is much appreciated.

Networking:
1. Can a Mac user and a PC user play a network game (as in Descent)?
2. Is it over IPX?
3. How many simultaneous network players?

This is what the manaual says:

"...Windows95, DOS and Macintosh computer owners can race head-to-head against one another using either a modem or direct connection."

"Network play is not present in the Windows 95 version of Indy Car Racing II; however, Macintosh users can establish a network connection via Appletalk. Other network connection types, such as TCP/IP or IPX cannot accomodate Indy Car Racing II. Appletalk is the only current network system supported."

Regarding the last question, I assume there can be 2 simultaneous network players.

The Screenshots:
Due to many requests, I have added an interior screenshot of the car to the review. During the review process, I had had problems getting screenshots during gameplay.

Quicktime:
I installed IndyCar on a 8100/100 and I was horrified to see that it was slower than my 6100! The program also crashed a lot. I used minium extentions but these problems still persisted. I decided to install Quicktime 2.5. I was amazed at the difference. QT had brought this game to the playable level and beyond. After this experience I installed 2.5 on my 6100 to find similar results. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you install Quicktime 2.5.

Scoring:
Several have compained that I have given the IndyCar review too high a score. After playing it on a 100MHz 601 Mac, I can't recommend anything less powerful. Therefore, if you have a 80 MHz Mac or lower (like myself) and are worried by the game speed, think hard before parting with your cash. Althought I have no regrets, I think a faster Mac is needed to get the full potiential of the game and I stick by my scoring.

Updates:
There is a patch in limited availability that fixes a few problems with the current version of IndyCar-Mac. Here is what Sierra says about this patch:
"The patch is named MACICR2 and it is currently available on AOL in our software libraries, and the BBS, Compuserve, and internet sites should follow shortly. The patch helps correct some lockup and other general problems (mostly relatively minor), and might improve speed slightly for some systems....."

Visit Sierra's Site and Papyrus' Site. Eventually, the patch will end up there.
